….

I met with Monica in the heights on our lunch break. Not a minute into sitting down at the restaurant, she fired off her questions. “So, bitch, tell me about this Liam. Clearly, he’s giving it to you good, ‘cause you’ve been so distant these days. What does he do? Ooh, he ain’t got no kids, does he? You don’t need any drama from the first guy to enter your life after so long.”

A smile teased my lips as I twirled my iced latte. “No kids. He’s a songwriter—a successful one at that. He’s super sweet and respectful. Treats me like a queen, and he makes me laugh. He’s just all around a great guy.”

Her eyes beamed as she regarded me. “Wow, babe, you like this one. Does this mean you’re finally moving on from Chad and allowing another man to enter your heart?”

That question made me ponder a beat. “Honestly, I do feel like I’m letting Liam in.”

Monica creased her forehead. “I sense a ‘but’ coming.”

“Part of me is still slightly hanging on to Chad for some reason. I’m not all the way there yet with Liam.”

She shrugged. “That’s okay. Take it slow. You should spend time getting to know each other, anyway.”

Hearing that placed a sad feeling in my stomach. I didn’t have time. Liam was giving me until the end of our thirty-day agreement to ultimately decide on whether I was going to be with him entirely without holding on to the idea of Chad.

But truth be told, I wasn’t so sure if I would ignore Chad’s phone call if he reached out to me today. And even though Liam asked me to delete his number, I still had it in my contacts.

Why was it so hard to just let him go?

To let go of the past?

I considered telling Monica about Liam’s thirty-day offer and that I was currently living with him. But decided against it. She’d probably scold me on taking such a dangerous leap with a man I’d met at a bar.

“Liam wants me to go away with him this weekend,” I told her instead.

Her eyes lit up. She swallowed what was in her mouth and set her sandwich back on the plate. “Go away where? Wait, does this guy have money money?”

“Something like that. He has a private lake house. Should be nice for Labor Day weekend.”

“Shit. I like how you say it so casually. But damn, girl, you found yourself a rich man. That’s nice.” Then she grinned mischievously. “A weekend getaway sounds exciting. Lots of sex will be going down.”

I rolled my eyes. “Anyway.”

We resumed eating and talking about other things that didn’t include men. Then we went back to our individual jobs.
